Why not just buy a new car?
Vehicles are becoming like just about any other piece of electronics we purchase today - "throw-away technology." Gone are the old days of having your TV or telephone repaired. We no longer patch our clothes or resole our shoes. Why should we when replacing these things is often less expensive than fixing them?
So why should our vehicles be any different? Drive it for a few years and then trade it in on a new one and not have to worry about it! Well that's all fine and dandy if you don't have to worry about money every day of the week but let me ask you this:
What would YOU do with an extra $1000 a month?
Think about it. Even if your car payment is only $500 a month there are still added expenses that you may not be considering. Additional taxes, added insurance costs and maintenance costs all add up. I bet when you add everything up the total ends up being much higher than $1000 a month! For what? Something you drive to work and back? Piece of mind?
You see the economy and chances are you feel it too! Every one keeps telling us to buy buy buy but it's time to take a common sense approach to things for a minute here. It's ok to be a little bit selfish. I look at it this way: Why should I keep buying when doing this will put me in a position where I can't buy anymore? It's time to make smarter purchases here! That new smart phone isn't going to help your financial situation any more than a new SUV will!
I remember as a kid my mom bought me generic blue jeans and tennis shoes from K-Mart for school. I threw a temper tantrum because I JUST KNEW the other kids were going to tease and bully me for not having Levis and Reeboks, but she made me wear them anyway. And you know what? NOBODY CARED! After that first day of school it dawned on me that as long as you look decent nobody cares what brand your clothing is.
Well buying a new car every few years is no different - no different at all. There is no reason that modern fuel injected vehicles can't last 10-15 years if not much, much longer. When the average cost of a new car is up over $20,000 and a "decent" new car is $30,000 plus - well I don't understand why anyone would WANT to buy a new car? I understand that with financing and all that they make it very easy but there is one very important lesson to remember here - Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.
OK You've made your point but repairs are SO expensive!
It's no secret that repair shops inflate their prices. Contrary to popular belief they don't do it to gouge their customers - they do it because their overhead costs are so high! Lets face it, the rent is not cheap, tools are not cheap, technicians are not cheap, diagnostic equipment is not cheap and the more technologically advanced what we drive becomes the more money it will cost to get it fixed!
The good news is that on most vehicles the trend I've noticed over the last twenty years is that they are actually becoming easier to work on! That's right mechanical repairs are getting easier however it's the electrical side of things that makes things difficult. The more electronic modules that are used in a vehicle the more difficult they become to diagnose when things get wonky.
What does this mean? It means that if you can use basic hand tools then you can do a large portion of the maintenance on your vehicles yourself. It also means that you need to establish and maintain a good relationship with a repair shop you can trust. It's important to know that there are a lot of good independent repair shops out there, and there are also a lot of bad dealers. A shop is only as good as its technicians and even dealerships can suffer from bad help and poor management.
